World Friendship Day Events

“Real Food for the World, Starting With Milwaukee”

On September 30 FFGM members celebrated  World Friendship Day with a delicious Chili Supper and presentation about the objectives of the FFGM Service Committee and Will Allen’s Growing Power, (GP), a non-profit urban agricultural organization. The many food donations received were given to support the local food pantries and meal programs served by the Meal Ministry of St. Matthew’s Church where the event was held.   Since world hunger is such a problem not only worldwide but locally as well, FFGM determined that this event would be local.

On Saturday, a number of members toured GP, and a few members volunteered to work part of the afternoon for this worthwhile cause.  Our efforts included redistributing black peas and also sifting coarse composted earth into what is termed “black gold”, a nutrient-rich soil that is the basis of the GP gardens.  The work was easy, and we even had time to promote FFGM to an inquisitive tour going through the facility. Needless to say, it was an “enriching experience” in more ways than one as we left with our own healthy purchases.
